Can you be a body positive teacher and promote weight loss?

I started dieting at the age of twelve; beginning with the “three day diet” which consisted of a slice of toast, grapefruit, peanut butter, hotdogs, strawberries, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. At twelve, I was already conditioned to look outside myself for validation. At twelve, I had already fallen into the trap of quick external fixes for an internal wound.

I started practicing yoga to heal. I believe healing is a life long journey and some days I don't want to heal. Some days healing is hard work. Today was one of those days.

Then, the Universe showed up for me with the following direct message from a follower:

"I went to my first in person class last night! I thought of your words on being patient with our bodies and not all yogi's are slim and muscular! I was battling the image in my head and remembering your posts helped me smile and love my body shape."

I was shocked. This practice always has a way of humbling me. If I knew this would be me at age twenty-nine, the twelve year old me would have dumped the dry toast and peanut butter in the trash where it belonged.

Today I was reminded to step out of my own way. I am being called to a vision much larger than myself. And guess what, this vision isn't a quick fix. You don't have to wait to loose weight to show up on your yoga mat. You don't have to wait to have the perfect car, outfit, equipment, or education. If you are called to do something it's because there is room for you. So go take up space with ya bad self!
